User Spotlight: Marissa Longstreet of SLUGS

Meet Marissa Longstreet — the songwriter behind LA indie act, Slugs. Marissa invited Resyn into her Echo Park home studio and shared the lore behind her favorite Jazzmaster, a newly adopted Gibson SG, a vintage Akai sampler, and much more in here shop SLUGSLYFE

The Echo Park-based songwriter has a hand in every step of the creative process, proudly rooted in DIY and proof that the story behind the gear shapes the music itself.

The new Slugs album, in btwn, returns with their signature locked harmonies and classic indie band crescendos, and boasts maturing melodic sensibilities, a playfully acidic lyrical prowess and lush soundscapes. The surprise? All the vocals and instruments were recorded on an SM58. (And it doesn’t sound like it!)

This begs the question… How much does it matter what gear we use?

Nice. Is the new album available to listen to on a streaming platform?

As far as equipment goes, I think it matters more how well you know the ins and outs of the gear you’re using. Getting the best performance out of each mic, instrument, or plugin usually has more impact than chasing new gear. Knowing your tools lets the music come through.

the gear is eveverything! she has an incredible collection. loved seeing her shop and the backround on her process.

Couldn’t agree more about knowing your tools!

Very nice! Sounds awesome. It’s hard to believe that all the vocals and instruments were recorded on an SM58. Those 58s’ have always been versatile workhorses. Are those real crickets recorded at the end of the last song, “trash ruin my live”?
